Baghdad, 7 April 2019 – Today, as the world commemorates World Health Day with the theme, Universal Health Coverage (UHC), WHO, UNFPA and UNICEF recommit to supporting the Government of Iraq ensure that every person in Iraq has access to quality health care services, in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of achieving universal health coverage by 2030.

7 April 2019 This World Health Day focuses on universal health coverage and the crucial role primary health care plays in making such coverage a reality.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) welcomes an additional contribution of USD 5.4 million from the Government of Japan to support reconstruction and peacebuilding in Iraq through the rehabilitation of war-damaged houses and construction of low-cost housing units in key liberated cities.

On 28 March 2019, representatives of federal and local authorities, community leaders, non-governmental organizations, businesses, academia, as well as implementing partners, gathered in the city of Basra, South of Iraq, to launch a new programme.

Baghdad, 28 March 2019 – The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) welcomes an additional contribution of USD 1,625,000 from the Government of Japan to further mitigate the threat posed by explosive hazards in support of the provision, facilitation and enablement of humanitarian and stabilization support.

On 26 March 2019, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) officially handed over a total of 286 durable core houses in three sites located in Ramadi, Fallujah and Karma, Anbar Governorate. Aiming at achieving the full realization of the right to adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, these sites were developed under the project titled “Gender-Sensitive Durable Shelter Support for Internally Displaced Persons in Iraq”, generously funded by the Government of Japan.

The path towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development must be clear of landmines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices. All people have the right to live in security, and not fear their next step. Mine action clears paths and creates safe ground on which homes can be built or rebuilt. Mine action changes mindsets so that people know how to protect themselves. It gives people and communities new horizons and hope.
