Baghdad, 15 December 2013 – The United Nations in Iraq announces that the first WFP chartered flight that will allow UN relief agencies (WFP and UNICEF) to resupply their warehouses in Eastern Syria took off today from Erbil airport to Eastern Syria. The flight, which transported around 4 tons of food items provided by WFP, is the first of several others which will transport a total of 400 metric tons of WFP provided food items, as well as 24 tons of UNICEF provided food items and 196 kg of medical kits, from their reserves in Iraq.

The United Nations in Iraq reiterates its gratitude to the Government of Iraq and all who have worked closely on this important initiative. “This will help alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, who are facing extremely harsh living conditions, as winter storms hit the region,” the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, said.
