World Refugee Day: SRSG Kobler Visits Camp for Persons Fleeing Violence in Syria

Baghdad, 20 June 2012 – To mark World Refugee Day, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler, visited Domiz Camp in Dohuk Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq yesterday, 19 June. He met with the head of the Provincial Council, Dr. Fadhil Omar, in Dohuk, and spoke to residents in the camp to learn more about the needs and concerns of the individuals and families who have fled the ongoing violence in Syria. عربي  كوردی

“World Refugee Day is a day to remember the millions of people around the world who have been forcibly displaced from their homes and communities. I am here today to draw attention to the plight of refugees and displaced persons in Iraq,” SRSG Kobler said during the visit.

As of 19 June, the camp population in Domiz numbers 1,780 persons, including 1,400 individuals in 250 families. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is leading the provision of protection to residents and the establishment of the basic infrastructure and delivery of other services in the camp, in close collaboration with the government line departments, UN agencies and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). UNHCR, IOM and local non-governmental organisations have provided residents with tents and non-food relief items such as blankets, water filters, gas cylinders, stoves, kitchen sets and mattresses.

“Much has already been done to provide the residents of Domiz Camp with basic necessities, and every effort should be made in particular to address the needs of children and other vulnerable persons,” Mr. Kobler stressed. “The United Nations will continue to assist Dohuk Governorate and the Kurdistan Regional Government in these efforts.”

Around 6,000 new arrivals have been registered by UNHCR and the Department of Displaced and Migration in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Around 1,000 persons arrive every month.
