UNAMI urges the Kurdistan Regional Government and Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) to use this additional time to take the necessary legislative, technical and operational steps to ensure that the elections are held in a timely manner and in accordance with internationally accepted standards.

“Free, fair and transparent elections are crucial for democracy,” said the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler. “We reiterate our call on the Council of Representatives to ensure the timely selection of  the new Board of Commissioners of IHEC,” he added.

In accordance with its mandate, UNAMI will continue to provide technical assistance to IHEC and Iraqi authorities in preparation for the holding of these elections and other electoral events, including the nation-wide Governorate Council elections expected to be held in 2013.
