Human Rights Are a Cornerstone of Every Democratic State, UN Envoy to Iraq Says

Baghdad, 25 April 2012 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler, met today with the Iraqi Minister of Human Rights, Mr. Mohammed Shi\'a Al-Sudani. عربي  كوردی

"Human rights are a cornerstone of every democratic state," Mr. Kobler said. "They are also at the core of the UN\'s mandate. We stand ready to continue our support to the activities of the Minister of Human Rights as a key player in ensuring that Iraq meets its international human rights obligations."

 

During the meeting, SRSG Kobler and Minister Al-Sudani reviewed the situation of human rights in Iraq and agreed to pay increasing attention to social, economic and cultural rights, while also remaining committed to promoting and protecting political and civil rights.

 

In addition, SRSG Kobler informed Minister Al-Sudani that the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will be issuing in the next few days their joint periodic Report on the Human Rights Situation in Iraq for the year 2011.
