Friends of UNICEF Youth Voluntary Group Promotes Water Conservation

Baghdad, Iraq, 26 June, 2015 – The Friends of UNICEF youth voluntary group held their first event supporting UNICEF with the Water and Sanitation (WASH) programme to promote water conservation in Iraq in Baghdad. The event was supported by the European Union (EU) as part of a public awareness project to promote efficient water use and improved hygiene practices in Iraq.

The Friends of UNICEF youth voluntary group was formed, in cooperation with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), specifically to support all UNICEF programmes which focus on child related issues through community mobilization to promote positive behaviours and practices.

Commending the Iraqi youth on this occasion, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (DSRSG), Mr. Gyorgy Busztin said: “We welcome the formation of this enthusiastic and vibrant group of young Iraqis whose actions will revive traditions of community volunteerism and whose voices will speak for future generations as they work together with the United Nations in advocating for development and sustainability in Iraq”.

Dr. Ali Al-Khateeb, acting chief of WASH in UNICEF Baghdad, explained: “This launch of the campaign for water conservation in Iraq with the Friends of UNICEF youth group is a major step forward in harnessing the energy of young people in Iraq. The youth group activities will mainly focus on raising awareness in their communities to change behaviours towards water conservation and hygiene practices in Iraq. However, once the group is active, they can have a very positive impact across a wide range of child rights issues.”

The “Friends of UNICEF” initiative comes as a result of months of planning and collaboration between the Iraqi youth, UNAMI and UNICEF Iraq.
