New York / Baghdad, 29 August 2019 – Briefing the UN Security Council on the situation in Iraq, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, urged the international community to continue its critical support for Iraq’s post-conflict recovery. She welcomed the government’s multilateral diplomacy efforts in the context of regional tensions, and called on Iraq’s political actors to work together to tackle priorities, including placing all arms under state control, strengthening institution-building and enacting reforms.

Baghdad, 28 August 2019 – The Government of Iraq has today signed an historic agreement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), committing USD 33 million for stabilization activities across the country.

Baghdad, Iraq, 26 August 2019 – Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Alice Walpole, yesterday addressed the launch of a Regional Forum aimed at advancing women’s rights in Iraq and across the Middle Eastern region, with participants from Iraq, Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Yemen. The forum is being held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Iraq, with support from the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), UN Women, the Women’s International League for Peace and the Dutch Embassy.

Sulaymaniya, 25 August 2019 – The latest in a series of United Nations-sponsored workshops bringing together young Iraqis took place in Sulaymaniya in the Kurdistan Region this week, providing local youth activists with a platform to voice their aspirations for the future and discuss how they can contribute to tackling the challenges facing their communities.

Baghdad, 19 August 2019 - Today, on the tenth anniversary of World Humanitarian Day, the United Nations honours the contribution of the nearly quarter-million female aid workers who provide humanitarian assistance to people in need. This year, the UN and partners are launching the #WomenHumanitarians global campaign to pay special tribute to women who work to save lives and alleviate human suffering.

As we mark World Humanitarian Day, UNFPA salutes those who respond to crises around the world. This year, we call attention to the courage and commitment of women humanitarians who assist people amidst conflict, disasters and displacement.

From their communities to their capital cities, young people everywhere are demanding their rights, as affirmed 25 years ago at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo. In the decades since, we at UNFPA have accompanied countless young people on the journey from adolescence to adulthood.

BAGHDAD, Iraq, 8 August 2019 – UNFPA Director for the Arab region, Dr. Luay Shabaneh, concluded last week a four-day visit to Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. During the visit, Dr. Shabaneh marked the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), World Population Day and UNFPA 50th anniversary with the Iraqi people and Government.

Erbil — The ISIL conflict displaced 6 million people in Iraq, disrupted the national economy and limited employment opportunities for citizens. Sixty per cent of jobs in Iraq are in the private sector, within Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs); very large numbers of those businesses experienced loss as a result of the conflict and need support to rebuild.
