Dohuk, 7 December 2017 - Enhancing human rights education for students in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was the focus of a three-day training course for 24 secondary school teachers in Dohuk.

Erbil, 08 December 2017- Key Ministers and officials from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I) alongside representatives of the private sector, civil society, labour unions, the international community, donors and development agencies convened at a high-level conference yesterday in Erbil on E-Governance and Public Service Centres. The Ministry of Interior of the KR-I organized the conference under the auspices of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, H.E. Mr. Nechirvan Barzani, and with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Baghdad, 4 December 2017 – Following to the Cabinet’s endorsement on the draft legal framework to address informal settlements and to prevent encroachments on public lands, the Ministry of Planning and the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), organized an orientation seminar with the heads and members of the Legal, Services, Security and Defense committees in the Iraqi Parliament in preparation for the official discussion of the draft legislation.

Baghdad, 6 December 2017 –The United Nations pressed at a meeting in the context of the 16 Days of Activism for expanding the space for women in State institutions, political parties, economic and social life and for enhanced and effective protection of their rights.

Baghdad, 07 December 2017 – The Government of Portugal will support explosive hazard management, risk education and capacity enhancement initiatives to address explosive hazards in Iraq, with a contribution of one hundred and fifty thousand Euros (USD 175,000) to the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).

Baghdad, 06 December 2017 – The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has recently been granted access to the Old City of Mosul to assess, survey and clear explosive hazards including improvised explosive devices and explosive remnants of war to complement the work of the Iraqi Security Forces. This will not only facilitate rehabilitation of infrastructure and assist the stabilization process but also allow for the safe return of displaced families to their homes.

The Special Representatives of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SVC), Pramila Patten, and for Children and Armed Conflict, Virginia Gamba urged Iraq to reconsider the draft amendments to the Personal Status Law that alter fundamentally the legal provisions governing marriage. It is a matter of concern that these draft amendments are silent on the minimum age of consent to marriage and do not apply to all components of Iraqi society.

Baghdad, 05 December 2017 – The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) welcomes the contribution of 5 million Czech crown (US$232,000) from the Government of the Czech Republic to support the training of Iraqi local police.

Baghdad, 29 November 2017 - during a ceremony hosted by the Iraqi Communications and Media Committee (CMC), H. Exc. Mr. Bruno Aubert, Ambassador of France to Iraq and Mrs. Louise Haxthausen, UNESCO Director and Representative to Iraq, signed the project “Voices of Peace: Promoting Peaceful Coexistence in the Liberated Areas of Iraq through Community media”, in the presence of Dr. Ali Naser, Executive Director of the Communication and Media Commission of Iraq.
