Baghdad, 31 January – The Chairman of the Independent High Electoral Commission tonight congratulated all Iraqis as he announced the closure of more than 6,471 polling centers and 41,495 polling stations after 11 hours of voting by millions of Iraqis.  “This is a crucial election for our country.   I am proud of the enthusiasm Iraqis showed today when they came out to vote for better futures for all of us.” 

Baghdad, 22 January 2009 - In the run-up to the Governorate Council elections, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Staffan de Mistura, emphasized the importance of women\'s full participation for the success of the elections. "The United Nations strongly supports the rightful aspiration of Iraqi women to see the law regarding the women\'s quota interpreted in a fair and appropriate way that leads to greater representation of women on the Governorate Councils", the SRSG said.

Baghdad - January 19, 2009 - On January 14 and 15, UNAMI Human Rights Office and the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crimes (UNODC), with the support of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) held a national legislative expert workshop on the ratification and implementation of the universal legal instruments against terrorism. Representatives from the Human Rights, Defense and Legal Committees of the Council of Representatives (CoR) attended the workshop and agreed to form a joint working committee to advance the ratification process of the remaining legal conventions against terrorism not ratified by Iraq to date and to discuss and propose amendments to the current anti-terrorism law.

Baghdad, 19 January 2009 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Staffan de Mistura expresses his deep sorrow and regret following the assassination in a suicide bomb attack of Sheikh Hassan Zaidan al-Luhaibi, deputy head of the Iraqi Front for National Dialogue in his guest house in Al-Gayara town, south of Mosul.

Baghdad - 17 January 2009 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura strongly condemned the second assassination in two weeks of a candidate for the forthcoming provincial council  elections.

Baghdad, January 15 2009 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG), Staffan de Mistura met today with leaders of political blocs at the Council of Representatives to brief them on the state of readiness and technical preparations for the upcoming elections, and to outline the special measures being put in place to tackle fraud.

Baghdad- 13 January 2009- Chairman of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) Faraj Al Haydari, the IHEC’s Chief Electoral Officer Qasim Al-Aboudi and the Special Representative of the United Nations’ Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura held a joint press briefing addressing technical electoral matters on how to mark the ballot paper, and locate the correct polling station on election day.

Baghdad-5 January 2009- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura condemns in the strongest terms the attacks targeting pilgrims both yesterday and today. The SRSG described these actions that resulted in the killing of at least forty pilgrims in Al Kadhimiya on Sunday, 4 January and injured scores more, as well as the booby-trap detonated on Monday, 5 January, wounding at least a dozen other civilians as “appalling and unjustified crimes.”

Baghdad-01 January 2009- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura condemned the assassination of Mr. Mowaffaq al-Hamdani, a candidate on the "Iraq for Us" list in Mosul. “The murder of Mr. Hamdani represents the worst kind of election violence, which should not be tolerated,” said Mr. de Mistura.

Baghdad, 29 December 2008-On 20 December 2008, the Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) concluded a five day training course for the Iraqi Ministry of Defense on the principles of human rights and international humanitarian law relevant to Iraq. The training program conducted in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil, between 16-20 December, is part of a large scale project aimed at mainstreaming human rights into the functions of the Ministries of Defense and Interior, and at helping build their capacities in the various areas of human rights.
