Baghdad, 26 April 2013 - In a strong call for restraint and serious dialogue, after the recent clashes that killed and wounded hundreds across Iraq, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, expressed his fear that the country could head towards the unknown if decisive measures are not taken immediately and effectively to stop the spiral of violence from unfolding further.

UN Envoy calls for restraint in Hawija

Baghdad, 22 April 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, is closely following the situation in Hawija and is in contact with all the parties involved.

The Secretary-General congratulates the people of Iraq for participating in the Governorate Council elections. By exercising their constitutional right to vote, the Iraqi people have reaffirmed their desire for a democratic Iraq. The Secretary-General applauds their courage and determination, which  thwarted attempts to disrupt the electoral process through a vicious campaign of assassinations of candidates, threats to electoral staff and terrorist attacks.

GENEVA (19 April 2013) – The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Friday condemned the execution of 21 individuals in Iraq earlier in the week, which brought the total to 33 in the past month, and said she was appalled by reports that the Ministry of Justice has announced that a further 150 people may be executed in the coming days.

Baghdad, 18 April 2013 – In the run-up to the Governorate Council elections, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, emphasizes the importance of the active participation of all eligible Iraqis for the success of the poll. “I am calling on all women and men to cast their ballots for a better future for them and their children,” the UN envoy said.
