Baghdad, 17 May 2010 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ad Melkert welcomed the proper conduct of the manual recount process, followed by the announcement of the recount results.

Erbil, 17 May 2010 – The Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) jointly with British based NGO Aegis Trust successfully conducted a specialized training on international criminal law and fair trial principles in Erbil, from 9 to 13 May. The training aimed at developing a broad and deeper understanding of what qualifies as international crimes along with the procedural and the evidence-based aspects of international criminal justice and the principles of a fair trial.

Erbil, 16 May 2010 - In follow-up to a series of meetings, and under the auspices of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), talks were held on 15th May between the Hadba and the Ninewa Fraternal Lists on concrete approaches to end the current boycott of the Ninewa Fraternal List to the Provincial Council of Ninewa. The meeting was chaired by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq Ad Melkert and attended by delegations led by KRG Minister of Interior Kareem Sinjari  and Ninewa’s Governor Atheel Nujaifi in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Rafae Essawi and KRG President\'s Chief of Staff Fuad Hussein.

Mosul, 12 May 2010 – As part of the confidence building process between the Hadba List and the Ninewa Fraternity List, the Ninewa Detainees Committee met for a second round of talks on 10 May 2010 in Mosul, under the auspices of the United Nations.

Baghdad, 11 May 2010- The United Nations (UN) and Iraq signed today the first United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for Iraq for the period 2011-2014, marking a new strategic partnership between the funds, programmes and agencies of the UN and the Government of Iraq. The UNDAF has been developed by the United Nations Country Team in partnership with the Government of Iraq and other national partners.

Erbil, 27 April 2010 – The first meeting of the Ninewa Detainee Committee was held on 25 April, under the auspices of the United Nations, to discuss possible ways forward regarding the issue of detainees and prisoners from Ninewa in Kurdistan Regional Government facilities.

Baghdad, 5 April 2010—Under the auspices of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) the Special Representative of the Secretary-General Ad Melkert chaired a meeting to discuss the situation in Ninewa including possible approaches to end the current boycott of the Provincial Council by the Ninewa Fraternal List. The meeting was held in Baghdad and was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Rafae Essawi, KRG Minister of Interior Kareem Sinjari, Ninewa Governor Atheel Nujaifi, Member of Parliament-elect Ajeel al Yawar, Head of KDP in Ninewa Khosro Goran, Head of the PUK in Ninewa Harem Agha.

Baghdad, 5 April 2010 — The Special Representative of the United Nations-Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert strongly condemned the series of bombing that struck Baghdad yesterday killing dozens of innocent civilians and injuring many more. Mr. Melkert described the bombings as, “A senseless crime that targeted civilians and diplomats in Baghdad.” Amongst those killed was an Iraqi United Nations staff member, working for the World Health Organization along with her 20 year old son.

As the count for the national elections held between 4th and 7th March has been completed by IHEC there is now a solid basis for ratification by the Supreme Court.

Baghdad, 8 March 2010 - On International Women’s Day, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert, congratulated women in Iraq for participating in great numbers in the Council of Representatives’ election held on 7 March. One thousand eight hundred and thirteen female candidates representing 12 coalitions and their respective 165 political entities ran for 82 women’s seats.  “The United Nations keeps women’s empowerment high on its assistance agenda as a cornerstone for development,” the SRSG said, adding that the UN will continue to coordinate with the Government of Iraq and civil society to enhance the social, economic and political engagement of women in Iraq.
