This year, on the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, we celebrate ten years since the adoption of the United Nations Security Council’s landmark resolution 1820 (2008), which classified the use of conflict-related sexual violence as an impediment to the restoration of international peace and security.

Today, more than 68 million people around the world are refugees or internally displaced as a result of conflict or persecution.

That is equivalent to the population of the world’s 20th largest country.

UNHCR Special Envoy meets families who survived years of terror and displacement and who are now striving to rebuild their homes and lives

MOSUL, Iraq (16 June) – UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie today visited West Mosul, less than a year after the city’s liberation in June and July 2017. The visit marked Jolie’s 61st mission – and her fifth visit to Iraq – with the UN Refugee Agency since 2001. She arrived in the city on the second day of Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan.

UN’s Kubiš Eid-ul-Fitr Greetings to Iraqis

Baghdad, 14 June 2018 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, extends his warmest greetings and wishes for peace and prosperity to all Muslims and to all the Iraqi people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

On 10 June 2018, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) officially handed over a total of 27 housing units in Teleskuf, Nineveh Governorate, rehabilitated under the project titled “Promoting Urban Recovery and Resilience in Newly Liberated Areas in Iraq”, generously funded by the Government of Japan.

SRSG Kubiš condemns bombing in Kirkuk

Baghdad, 9 June 2018 – Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ján Kubiš, strongly condemned the bombing that took place late on Friday in Kirkuk.

Baghdad, 10 May 2018- The Ministry of the Interior of Iraq and UNDP held a workshop on establishing standard operating procedures (SOP) for criminal investigations.

BAGHDAD – The Logistics Cluster, led by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), has welcomed a generous contribution of US$860,000 from the Iraq Humanitarian Fund (IHF). The Cluster facilitates the movement of humanitarian supplies including food, medicines and even ambulances on behalf of the entire humanitarian community in Iraq.
