Baghdad, Iraq, 9 September 2018 – A meeting with women leaders, former MPs and former Ministers, civil society and youth activists facilitated by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) pressed for robust participation of women in negotiations for government formation and for holding key ministerial posts in the next Cabinet.

Baghdad, Iraq, 8 September 2018 - Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq Ján Kubiš condemns violence and riots in the recent days in Basra, attacks on government, political parties’ and media offices, hospitals, oil installation and the airport, the ransacking of the Iranian consulate and public and private property. These acts of violence have nothing to do with the people’s rightful demands for services, jobs and against corruption and work against their very legitimate rights and expectations of dignified peaceful life.

(Baghdad/New York, 06 September 2018): The Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations investigative team to promote accountability for Da’esh / ISIL crimes (UNITAD) under UNSCR 2379, Mr. Karim Khan, recently visited Iraq during which he heard first-hand the heart-wrenching accounts of survivors of Da’esh’s violence. Mr. Khan stressed the need to ensure that survivors of conflict-related violence are protected, their interests advanced, and that perpetrators of these heinous crimes be brought to justice.

Baghdad, 5 September 2018 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, expresses grave concern over the casualties during violent protests over the lack of critical public services in Basra. He offers condolences to the families of the dead and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

Erbil, 4 September 2018 – For the first time in nearly four years, the number of displaced Iraqis has fallen below two million, according to a milestone IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) report released today (04/09).

Baghdad, 30 August 2018 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Training and Qualification Directorate in the Ministry of Interior’s (MoI) jointly delivered two pilot courses on training of trainers (ToT) on the topic of ‘Improving the Effectiveness of Local Police (IELP)’. The course duration was two weeks and was attended by 38 mid-ranking police officers from the training academies in Baghdad, Anbar, Ninewa, Basra, Salah Al-Din, Kirkuk and Diyala provinces. The overall course objectives were to introduce and upskill participants' knowledge and techniques in improving public security in the operational environment and, to introduce new and practical training presentation techniques. The pilot IELP TOT was designed and delivered as a follow-up to the basic IELP pilot training that took place in March 2018.

Baghdad, Iraq, 2 September 2018 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) welcomes the IHEC decision on 1 September 2018 to rescind its previous ruling issued on 27 August 2018 concerning procedures of forming political (parliamentary) alliances.

Baghdad, Iraq, 31 August 2018 - The Secretary-General of the United Nations has appointed Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert as his Special Representative for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Current Special Representative Ján Kubiš continues to serve as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and Head of UNAMI until later in the year.

Halabja, Iraq, 30 August 2018 – Police officers in Halabja city have completed a two-day training course organized by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO) on core human rights principles relating to police work.
