Baghdad, October 22, 2018 –The Ministry of Agriculture in Iraq, in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme in Iraq (WFP) celebrated the World Food Day under the patronage of H.E. Minister of Agriculture at the Ministry in Baghdad. The theme for this event is ““Our Actions Are Our Future, Ending World Hunger by 2030 is Possible”

Baghdad, Iraq, 21 October 2018 – Following extensive discussions with Iraqi government and political party leaders, the Special Representative for Iraq of the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ján Kubiš, notes their intention to facilitate the formation of the next government within the constitutional timeline so it can promptly embark on responding to the needs and requirements of the people for services and their dignified life. Mr. Kubiš urges all the political parties to support Prime Minister-Designate Mr. Adel Abdel-Mahdi’s efforts and cooperate with him in the government formation process, prioritizing the well-being of the country and its people over partisan interests. The people of Iraq expect the Prime Minister-Designate to be able and free to choose his own Cabinet team with a composition that will send a strong positive response to Iraqi citizens who demand radical change and a break with the practices of the past.

Baghdad, October 21, 2018 – A child born in Iraq today will be 40% as productive when she grows up as she could be if she enjoyed complete education and full health, according to the World Bank’s new Human Capital Index (HCI) released October 11 in Bali. Decades of conflict have impacted a range of the country’s human and economic development indicators. Iraq is an early adopter of the World Bank’s Human Capital Project and plans to invest in its people to overcome development deficits with programs such as increasing early childhood development and the expansion of social protection systems.

Baghdad, 18 October 2018 – The presence of explosive hazards, including improvised explosive devices in areas liberated from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), will continue to impede security and stability efforts as well as development initiatives until these are cleared and rendered safe.

17 October 2018 ROME – Fresh research by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), released to coincide with World Food Day, shows food becoming ever less affordable in countries in conflict or subject to political instability. In dozens more countries, persistently high food costs are putting the hope of a nutritious meal beyond the reach of millions.

Twenty-five years ago, the world commemorated the first International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Since then, nearly 1 billion people have escaped poverty, thanks to political leadership, inclusive economic development and international cooperation.

New York, 10 October 2018 - Commending the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad as a symbol of the resilience of the victims of ISIL/Da’esh crimes, the Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations Investigative Team to promote accountability for Da’esh / ISIL crimes (UNITAD), Mr. Karim Khan, said her bravery and selfless sacrifice will serve as further impetus for his Team’s work in supporting the Government of Iraq to hold those responsible to account.

Erbil – The UN Migration Agency, IOM, congratulates the 2018 Nobel Peace Laureates Dr. Denis Mukwege, a Congolese doctor and advocate, and Nadia Murad, a prominent Yazidi human rights activist, for their efforts to end the scourge of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.
For Ms. Murad, the prize comes more than three years after she escaped her ISIL captors in Iraq and resettled to Germany as part of the Humanitarian Admission Programme, jointly implemented by the German State of Baden-Württemberg and IOM Iraq, in close partnership with the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq.

Baghdad, Iraq, 9 October 2018 - The Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Ms. Marta Ruedas, is deeply saddened by the death of a deminer working for the international NGO Mines Advisory Group (MAG) while undertaking humanitarian clearance operations in the area north of Tel Afar in northwestern Iraq.
