Baghdad, 15 January 2018 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Ján Kubiš, strongly condemns the terrorist suicide bombings in Baghdad this morning in which scores of civilians were killed or wounded.

Erbil – For the first time since the beginning of the Iraq crisis in December 2013, the number of people returning to their area of origin has surpassed the number of people displaced in the country.

Sulaimaniyah, Iraq, 12 January 2018 - Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) faces significant challenges but will be able to surmount them and deliver a timely, fair and transparent national election on 12 May 2018, the United Nations has said, pledging continued technical support to ensure an effective and credible process that wins the confidence of Iraqi voters, politicians and the international community.

Baghdad, 09 January 2018 – The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) welcomes an additional contribution of € 17 million ($20.2 million) from the Government of Germany towards survey and clearance of explosive hazards in support of humanitarian and stabilization initiatives. The overall contribution, totalling € 44.2 million ($52.5 million) since 2016, makes the Government of Germany the most significant donor to UNMAS in Iraq.

Baghdad, Iraq - Date: 27 December 2017: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes the additional contribution of 34.5 million euros for 2017 and four million euros for 2018 from the Federal Republic of Germany to provide assistance to displaced Iraqis. This brings the total amount received from Germany for this contribution for the period 2015-2018 to a total of 90.5 million euros.

Greetings Message

Baghdad, 24 December 2017 – Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ján Kubiš, extends his greetings to the Iraqi people, in particular the Christian community, on the occasion of Christmas and of the New Year celebrations.

Erbil, 14 December 2017 – The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) held a certification ceremony for 11 mine action personnel from the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) and 8 mine action implementing partners, following their completion of the ‘risk education managerial skills’ workshop to enhance the respond to the explosive hazard threat in liberated areas in Iraq. A similar workshop was organized last October in Baghdad.
