Baghdad, 30 August 2018 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Training and Qualification Directorate in the Ministry of Interior’s (MoI) jointly delivered two pilot courses on training of trainers (ToT) on the topic of ‘Improving the Effectiveness of Local Police (IELP)’. The course duration was two weeks and was attended by 38 mid-ranking police officers from the training academies in Baghdad, Anbar, Ninewa, Basra, Salah Al-Din, Kirkuk and Diyala provinces. The overall course objectives were to introduce and upskill participants' knowledge and techniques in improving public security in the operational environment and, to introduce new and practical training presentation techniques. The pilot IELP TOT was designed and delivered as a follow-up to the basic IELP pilot training that took place in March 2018.

Halabja, Iraq, 30 August 2018 – Police officers in Halabja city have completed a two-day training course organized by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO) on core human rights principles relating to police work.

Baghdad, Iraq, 29 August 2018 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, strongly condemns the terrorist bombing in the Al-Qaim area of western Anbar today that killed and injured a number of victims, including civilians. The United Nations Assistance Mission extends its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

Baghdad, 26 August 2018 – The Government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has contributed an additional USD 23.2 million (EUR 20 million) to UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization (FFS), which finances fast-track initiatives to stabilize areas liberated from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This brings the Netherlands’ total contribution to USD 65.4 million (EUR 57 million).

Erbil, Iraq; 27 August 2018 - The European Union continues its support to UNFPA in Iraq through a EUR 5 million contribution to sustain reproductive health and clinical management of rape services across Iraq.

Baghdad, 21 August 2018 In December last year, the United Nations General Assembly decided that there should be an annual International Day of Remembrance of, and Tribute to, the Victims of Terrorism, to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism, and to promote and protect their human rights and fundamental freedoms. The UN General Assembly chose 21 August as the date.

Karbala- The Governorate of Karbala in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and support of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) organized a conference to roll out the Holly Karbala Private Sector Development Strategy (2018-2030) in Karbala province.
