Baghdad, 12 August 2010 - This year’s commemoration of International Youth Day is a particularly important day for youth around the world as it marks the launch of the International Year of Youth, which was proclaimed by the United General-Assembly in December 2009 under the theme “Dialogue and Mutual Understanding”. The choice of the theme reflects the United Nations’ commitment to encouraging dialogue and understanding across generations, cultures and religions as well as its recognition of the need to ensure that the voices of youth around the world are heard for they are the leaders of the future and they must be involved in its shaping.

31 July 2010, Baghdad- The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Ms. Christine McNab, is deeply saddened by the bus crash of 29 July, in which three Iraqi officials and two contractors of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) lost their lives. They were among tens of participants to a UNDP training on democratic governance.  A number of other passengers were injured and they are receiving treatment in Jordan.

Baghdad, 26 July 2010 : On the occasion to mark the 10th anniversary of Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325 with a Global Open Day for Women and Peace, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the United Nations Iraqi Gender Task Force today organized a round table discussion with Iraqi women advocates, leaders and parliamentarians.  The session generated dialogue voicing the concerns, approaches and recommendations aiming to increase women’s participation in conflict resolution, peace making and peace building.

Baghdad, 26 July 2010 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert condemned in the strongest terms the attacks that targeted the regional satellite channel Al-Arabiya, in which four of its employees and another two bystanders were killed.

BAGHDAD/GENEVA, 8 July 2010 – The latest report by the United Nations on the human rights situation in Iraq shows further improvements in security, but warns that the overall human rights situation in the country remains a matter of concern. The study, covering the second half of 2009, was prepared by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The heinous attacks have resulted in killing dozens of worshippers and wounding hundreds more.

Baghdad, 26 June 2010: On the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, a day commemorated every year worldwide on 26 June, the United Nations in Iraq expresses solidarity with all victims of torture in Iraq and reaffirms the inalienable right of all men and women to live free of the fear of torture and stresses the need to end impunity of the perpetrators.

Baghdad, 1 June 2010 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ad Melkert, welcomed the decision announced today by the Federal Supreme Court, certifying the results of the Council of Representatives election, held on 7 March 2010, in accordance with the Constitution of Iraq. He described it as a crucial step towards the formation of a government that will shape the country’s future for the next four years.

Tilkaef - Ninewa, 29 May 2010 - Under the auspices of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the first meeting of the Committee on Ethnic and Religious Communities in Ninewa was convened on 27 May in Tilkaef.

Baghdad, 25 May 2010 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert, condemned in the strongest terms the assassination of newly elected Member of Parliament, Bashar Al-Ouqeidi who was shot dead in Mosul.
