Baghdad, 8 March 2010-I congratulate the more than 12 million Iraqis who went to the polls, some braving insecurity, to cast their ballots for a better future, marking the historic character of election day.  This turnout was beyond the expectations of many. I commend the IHEC Board of Commissioners and the more than 300,000 Iraqis engaged by IHEC, for their efforts to conduct elections in a well organized and professional fashion.  UNAMI is proud to have supported their work.

Baghdad, 21 February 2010 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert welcomes the signature of an electoral Code of Conduct by representatives of the main political blocs, and encourages all parties and candidates who have not done so to join such initiative to ensure their commitment to the fundamental standards of a free competition and dialogue on the basis of their electoral programs.

Baghdad, 11 February 2010 - On the eve of the start of the campaign for the 2010 Iraqi Council of Representatives election, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Ad Melkert, encourages the leaders of all political entities to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process.

Baghdad, 11 February 2010 - The High Level Task Force established to discuss the situation in Kirkuk and other areas held another meeting under UNAMI auspices.  The senior representatives in the Task Force from the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government continue to meet regularly to address the specific needs of the residents in the areas being considered.

Baghdad, 8 February 2010 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert, strongly condemned the assassination of a female election nominee, Suha Abdullah Jarallah, who was shot dead in Mosul, just before the electoral campaign is due to start.

Baghdad, 1 February 2010 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Ad Melkert expressed his profound shock and sadness at the mass killing and wounding of innocent pilgrims heading to the city of Kabala, to participate in the religious rite of Arba’en.

Baghdad -Thursday, 21 January 2010 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) extends its warm congratulations to the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for starting the ballot printing process for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Overall, more than 26 million ballots of 19 different types will be printed and distributed to approximately 50,000 polling stations which will be established by the IHEC to accommodate regular voting, special needs and absentee voting including the police, the military, detainees and hospital workers, as well as out-of-country voting (OCV).

Baghdad-24 December 2009-The Special Representative of the Secretary General for Iraq Ad Melkert wishes Iraqi Christians, and all Iraqis, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  He notes the United Nations\' deep appreciation to the important role Iraq\'s Christian have historically played in maintaining Iraq\'s unique and rich societal fabric, and their continued contribution to preserving  the country\'s unity in the face of adversity.    Mr. Melkert said, "Iraqi religious, and ethnic minorities are not only an integral part of Iraqi society, but they are a critical component in shaping the future of the country.”

BAGHDAD/GENEVA, 14 December 2009– The latest report of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) shows improvement beside renewed concerns on the situation of human rights in Iraq. The document, that covers the period from 1 January to 30 June 2009, makes special emphasis on the areas of rule of law and impunity, the reimplementation of the death penalty, the situation in prisons and detention centers, and allegations of torture.

Baghdad-14 December 2009- At different meetings with representatives of the Government of Iraq and with representatives of the diplomatic community in Baghdad, UNAMI has continued to promote further consultations concerning the future of the residents of Camp Ashraf.
