The Baghdad Marathon 2018

Baghdad, Iraq, 30 November 2018 - The Baghdad Marathon 2018 kicked off today with runners, walkers and enthusiastic supporters braving chilly, rainy weather to participate in the run in the Iraqi capital for the fourth year in a row.

Baghdad, Iraq, 30 November 2018 - The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq Human Rights Office (UNAMI HRO) facilitated two consultative workshops on 26 and 27 November bringing together 65 interlocutors (14 of whom were men), including members of parliament, media personnel, lawyers, academics, women’s rights activists, officials from the Ministry of Interior as well as the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR) to discuss efforts towards the enactment of the Anti-Domestic Violence Bill and the revision, amendment or repeal of Iraqi Penal Code Articles 398, which essentially allows a perpetrator to avoid charges by marrying his victim and 409, which is commonly relied upon for the killing of women and girls in the alleged protection of family “honour.”

Taking Art Through a Walk in Baghdad

Erbil, Kurdistan Region - On 15 November 2018, the UNAMI Human Rights Office delivered a training course on freedom of opinion and expression, the right of assembly, and the importance of responsible journalism in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq for representatives of the media, civil society activists, members of the Kurdistan Region Independent Board of Human Rights and other professionals advocating for freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.

Ramadi, Iraq, 17 November 2018 – Witnessing firsthand how the protection, development and stabilization work of the United Nations in Iraq in areas liberated from Da’esh can contribute to the prevention of crisis, Under-Secretary-General and the UN Secretary-General’s Advisor on Policy, Ms. Ana Maria Menéndez, visited Anbar Governorate in western Iraq on 17 November 2018. She met with local Iraqi officials, including the Governor and the head of the Provincial Council, to hear about the challenges the population are facing and how the UN can help to overcome them.

The ongoing Baghdad International Fair, in addition to inviting and promoting international and regional economic investment projects for Iraq, truly highlights the trade and expertise of Iraqi painters and skilled craftsmen.

Kirkuk, Iraq, 7 November 2018 - UNAMI’s Human Rights Office (HRO) conducted a training session for staff of the Iraqi Independent High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR) in Kirkuk City.
