From 27 to 28 June 2018, the UNAMI Human Rights Office in Baghdad conducted a specialized Training Programme on “Strengthening Human Rights Monitoring and Documentation Skills for the Secretariat of Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR)”. Thirty staff members of the Commission, including ten women in various departments of the Commission, including human rights, women, children, displaced persons and complaints from Baghdad, Najaf, Kirkuk, Karbala, Babel, Salah Alden Diyala, Diwaniya, and Samawa Governorates participated.

The provision of health care in the conflict-torn governorates of Anbar, Ninewa, and Kirkuk, has recently been augmented by additional 20 ambulances procured by the World Health Organization (WHO) to support the referral pathway and ambulatory services in the mentioned governorates.

A survivor from behind hospital doors

Um Qassem had been working as a midwife in Anbar province in Iraq since 2003 when the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) swept across large parts of her country in mid-2014, turning her and many other women’s lives into a nightmare, especially when the group tried to recruit her.
