Lalish, Iraq - Despite the tragedy that befell the Yazidi community since the onslaught of the Dae’sh terrorist group in Iraq in 2014, leading to persecution of thousands of Yazidis and mass destruction of Iraqi heritage, culture and infrastructure, the community in Iraq and from the diaspora joyously convened on 18 April 2018 at the grand Yazidi Temple in Lalish, in Northern Iraq, to celebrate Sari Sali (New Year) for the first time with the country freed from the terrorists who have deliberately and systematically singled out Yazidi men for annihilation and women for enslavement.

Extracting Olive Oil ceremony in Lalish Temple

"Olive Squeezing" to produce olive oil is a tradition that Yezidis carry out every year in early April. With the help of volunteers (khalma tekariya) who embrace the ceremony using traditional methods, the process starts with washing the olives that have been picked and dried to the maximum level. The olives are then cleaned and put in special bags.

Baghdad’s Qishla

Baghdad’s Qishla tells the story of modern Iraq. Built by the Ottoman Wali (ruler) in 1869, the Qishla Tower stands 23 meters tall on the bank of the River Tigris in central Baghdad. In 1927, the tower was fitted with a clock, a gift from King George V to the King of Iraq, Faisal I.

Further to the UN electoral needs assessment mission (NAM) deployed in November 2017, a follow-up assessment mission was conducted from 4-11 March 2018 to review preparations for the Council of Representatives (CoR) elections on 12 May 2018. The mission met with a wide range of national and international interlocutors, including the CoR, the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), political parties, civil society organizations, the judiciary, and the international community, including the UN family.
