GENEVA (11 July 2017) – The retaking of Mosul from ISIL by Iraqi Government forces, supported by their International Coalition partners, marks a significant turning point in the conflict, but Iraq faces a series of human rights challenges which, if left unaddressed, are likely to spark further violence and civilian suffering, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein has warned.

Location Geneva : We are extremely concerned at the situation of civilians in Mosul where fighting is becoming ever more intense and concentrated as Iraqi Security Forces, supported by the international coalition, push to retake the whole of the city from ISIL. We remind all parties to the conflict that they must abide by the principles of humanity, distinction, proportionality and precaution in carrying out military operations.

Geneva, 23 June 2017: We condemn the destruction of the al-Nuri Mosque and the Hadba Minaret in the Iraqi city of Mosul on Wednesday 21st June. Reports indicate that it was blown up deliberately by ISIL as Iraqi security forces were approaching.

GENEVA (8 June 2017) – Credible reports indicate that more than 231 civilians attempting to flee western Mosul have been killed since 26 May, including at least 204 over three days last week alone.

Sulaymaniyah, 16 April 2017 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO), as part of its programme of technical support to academic institutions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, held a seminar for students of the Faculty of Law, Diplomacy and International Relations of Human Development University in Sulaymaniyah on the “United Nations mechanisms for the protection of human rights and the Role of HRO-UNAMI in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.”

Sulaymaniyah, Iraq, 6 April 2017 – Police members in Sulaymaniyah have received training from the United Nations on raising awareness of police on the issues of human rights principles.

Erbil, Iraq, 12 March 2017 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO), within its program of technical support to academic institutions in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, held four training sessions for students of the Faculty of Law and International Relations of Cihan University in Erbil. Under the title “United Nations mechanisms for the protection of human rights in time of peace and conflict”, four training sessions delivered by HRO focused on UN mechanism for the protection of human rights, UN role in armed conflict, Rights of the child and role of UNICEF in the protection of children, and UN Charter and UDHR. Ten female and ten male students participated in the training which was held from 1 to 7 March.

Erbil, Kurdistan Region in Iraq, 12 March 2017 – The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office has started distributing the Booklet “Nine Core Human Rights Treaties and Three Optional Protocols” in the Kurdish language to different subjects in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq (KRI).

Baghdad, 26 January 2017 - As part of its work to promote the respect and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in cooperation with Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), published a report on the human rights situation of persons with disabilities in Iraq.
