Erbil, Iraq - 10 March 2016 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO) in Kurdistan Region conducted a specialised training course on “International Human Rights Mechanisms of Protection” for members of the High Committee to Evaluate and Respond to International Reports.

Human Rights Erbil Workshop IBHR 1 3From 9 to 11 February 2016, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office (HRO) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq conducted a specialized training course on “Strengthening the Monitoring and Documentation Skills of Staff Members of the Independent Commission of Human Rights’’. Twenty staff members of the Commission, including ten women staff members, in charge of human rights, women, children, displaced persons, complaints and other departments of the Commission participated in the course. The course is the first in a series of activities that aim to support national institutions in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. The Commission was established by law in 2010 to enhance and protect human rights in compliance with international human rights norms, and to raise awareness. It stands as one of the main partners of UNAMI in its human rights work in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

BAGHDAD/GENEVA (19 January 2016) – A UN report released today details the severe and extensive impact on civilians of the ongoing conflict in Iraq, with at least 18,802 civilians killed and another 36,245 wounded between 1 January 2014 and 31 October 2015. Another 3.2 million people have become internally displaced since January 2014, including more than a million children of school age.

UN marks Human Rights Day in Baghdad

Baghdad, 10 December 2015 - The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Iraq and the whole UN family in Iraq today commemorated Human Rights Day, in partnership with the Iraqi Council of Representatives. The theme for this year’s celebration is "Our Rights, Our Freedoms, Always”.
