(Baghdad, 24 January 2017): 100 days after military operations to retake Mosul started, humanitarian partners are expressing deep concern about the plight of the estimated 750,000 civilians who are currently living in the western sections of the city where fighting is expected to start in coming weeks.

Baghdad, 20 December 2016 - UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has welcomed the latest contribution of Euro 3m from Germany to provide protection and assistance to more than 3 million displaced Iraqis. This latest funding brings the total amount received from Germany to Euro 24m in 2016 and Euro 39m over three years. This generous support will enable UNHCR to continue its interventions to promote IDP protection, and provide winter assistance through the cold season.

ROME, 16 December 2016 – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed a contribution of US$3 million from the Government of Kuwait to provide emergency food assistance for thousands of Iraqi families affected by the ongoing crisis in Mosul.

14 December 2016: The UNESCO office in Iraq has led a rapid assessment mission to the Nimrud archaeological site, located in Nineveh Governorate, Iraq, on 14 December 2016. The objective of the mission was to assess the overall state of conservation of the site, in particular the extent of damage resulting from the deliberate destruction by ISIL/Daesh over the past 2 years. In addition, the mission aimed to identify emergency safeguarding measures that could be taken in order to prevent any further loss.
