WFP: Taking swift action to help Iraq's Displaced Populations

Iraq - As winter temperatures set in across Iraq, IOM is distributing fuel for use in kerosene heaters to vulnerable refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and host communities. These people, many of whom are facing long-term or multiple displacements and hardship, are often unable to afford the fuel needed to keep themselves warm.

Baghdad, 8 December 2015– In a ceremony in Baghdad today, Sweden signed a US$4 million agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support stabilization in newly liberated areas of Iraq. The contribution, provided to UNDP’s Funding Facility for Immediate Stabilization (FFIS), will help thousands of people as they try to restart their lives in areas which have been retaken from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Baghdad/Erbil, 30 November 2015: Kyung-wha Kang, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs visited Baghdad and Erbil to discuss the humanitarian crisis. “The human cost of the crisis is devastating. We are extremely worried that all indicators point to a dramatically worsening situation in the months ahead,” Ms. Kang said. “I spoke with women who had lost virtually everything. If we are to succeed in responding to their most basic needs, we need increased capacity, as well as improved access and security.
