Baghdad, 13 August 2014 – The United Nations have declared a ‘Level 3 Emergency’ for Iraq.  “Given the scale and complexity of the current humanitarian catastrophe, this measure will facilitate mobilization of additional resources in goods, funds and assets to ensure a more effective response to the humanitarian needs of populations affected by forced displacements”, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov said.

13 August, 2014 – The World Health Organization is supporting the delivery of urgently needed health services to people affected by insecurity in northern Iraq, including tens of thousands of children, women and men trapped on Sinjar Mountain and many more who have escaped to safer areas.  

Erbil,12 August, 2014 – As the humanitarian crisis continues to unfold in Iraq, UNICEF and other humanitarian actorsare stepping up efforts to meet the urgent needs of up to 30,000 members of the ethnic Yazidi minoritywho are being extracted from Sinjar Mountain, in addition to helping meet the needs of a further 12,000 displaced Christianswho are now sheltering in the Kurdish capital, Erbil.

Baghdad, 12 August 2014 – “We are gravely concerned by continued reports of acts of violence, including sexual violence against women and teenage girls and boys belonging to Iraqi minorities”, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Zainab Hawa Bangura said today. 

New York, 12 August 2014 - The Special Advisers of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, Adama Dieng, and on the Responsibility to Protect, Jennifer Welsh, condemn in the strongest terms the reported execution of some 500 members of the Yezidi community in Sinjar and surrounding areas in northern Iraq by members of the so-called Islamic State. They also express alarm at reports of the abduction by the “Islamic State” of some 1,500 Yezidi, Christian and Shabak women and girls.

August 12, 2014 - In the face of an ever-growing humanitarian crisis across northern Iraq, the UN yesterday reinforced its commitment to assisting the hundreds of thousands who have been displaced by violence. The situation Dahuk is of grave concern to WFP and UNHCR. Meeting with the Governor of Dahuk, FarhadAtrushi,whose province has seen an influx of more than 200,000 people since ISIL overran swathes of northern Iraq, World Food Programme Iraq Country Director Jane Pearce and UNHCR Iraq Country Representative Shoko Shimozawa pledged to support the Dahuk governorate in its considerable efforts to meet the needs of displaced Iraqis who have poured into Dahuk in recent months.

Baghdad, 10 August 2014 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, today said that “As a result of fighting between ISIS and Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq, hundreds of thousands of people have been forced from their homes and are in urgent need of life-saving assistance”.
