WFP Iraq Situation Report #66, August 2019

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes a new donation of EUR 3 million from the EU to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iraq. This funding will contribute to ensure the provision of legal assistance and civil documentation to over 30,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) across Iraq and to guarantee that camp management and camp coordination services (CCCM) are in place in all UNHCR-managed camps in Ninewa Governorate.

Greening Baghdad

Baghdad, 30 September 2019 - A gardening bazaar was held recently at the UNAMI compound in Baghdad.

Respect for cultural and linguistic diversity is an essential prerequisite for the promotion of the spirit of openness, equity and dialogue.

Diwaniya, Iraq, 29 September 2019 – Youth in Diwaniya Governorate had the opportunity to voice their hopes and concerns regarding their community and country at a 26-28 September workshop under the theme “Iraqi Youth: Pioneers for Dialogue and Stability”. The 12th in a series of workshops across the country was organised by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in cooperation with the Committee for Coexistence and Societal Peace under the Prime Minister’s Office and the Iraqi Al-Amal Association.

Baghdad, 29 September 2019 - On the occasion of the Islamic Day for Opposing Violence against Women, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) welcomed the efforts of the Iraqi government to combat gender-based violence, including domestic violence, and reaffirmed continued UN support towards achieving this.

The upgrading works were conducted under the National Program for the Rehabilitation and Regularization of Informal Settlements/IDPs Areas, funded by the United States Department of State.

Baghdad, 25 September 2019 - United Nations Deputy Special Representative for Iraq (DSRSG) Alice Walpole, accompanied by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) Principal Electoral Adviser, paid a call on Council of Representatives Deputy Speaker Bashir al-Haddad on 25 September to discuss the progress of preparations for the upcoming Provincial Council elections.

A biological remediation pilot project seeking to enhance nature’s own ability to clear up oil spills in Iraq’s conflict-affected areas is launched in Kirkuk by UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with the state-owned North Oil Company and the Ministry of Health and Environment, and facilitation support from the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI). The initiative seeks to harness naturally occurring soil bacteria as a powerful natural ally to decontaminate poisoned land.
