BAGHDAD, Iraq, 8 August 2019 – UNFPA Director for the Arab region, Dr. Luay Shabaneh, concluded last week a four-day visit to Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. During the visit, Dr. Shabaneh marked the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), World Population Day and UNFPA 50th anniversary with the Iraqi people and Government.

On 3 August 2019 at a ceremony in Sinjar the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, delivered occupancy certificates to a number of beneficiaries and a Yazidi community representative (Mukhtar).

Erbil — The ISIL conflict displaced 6 million people in Iraq, disrupted the national economy and limited employment opportunities for citizens. Sixty per cent of jobs in Iraq are in the private sector, within Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs); very large numbers of those businesses experienced loss as a result of the conflict and need support to rebuild.

SRSG Hennis-Plasschaert visit to Kocho, Sinjar

Kocho, Sinjar, Iraq, 03 August 2019 - The Special Representative for Iraq of the United Nations Secretary-General, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, met local officials and survivors in Kocho village in Sinjar, visited an art exhibition depicting the suffering of the Yazidi community and stoped at a mass grave site.

Sinjar, Iraq, 3 August 2019 - The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) handed over more than 200 occupancy certificates to Yazidi returnees to Sinjar, a move aimed at facilitating the return of the displaced community.

Sinjar, Iraq, 4 August 2019 – Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, visited Sinjar on the fifth anniversary of the gross atrocities committed by Da’esh against Iraq’s Yazidi community. During the visit, she saluted the survivors’ bravery, highlighted the continuing plight of the Yazidis and reiterated her call for urgent action to ensure stable governance and security arrangements.

Five years ago today, on 3 August 2014, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) - also known as Da’esh - launched an attack on the Sinjar region in Iraq’s northern Nineveh Governorate. Sinjar was home to the majority of the world’s Yazidis, a distinct religious group whose beliefs and practice span thousands of years.

Kut, Iraq, 28th July 2019 – At a three-day workshop from 25th to 27th July 2019, in the city of Kut in Wasit Governorate, a group of 27 young Iraqi women and men from across the Governorate discussed how youth can play a role in addressing the challenges facing their communities.

Baghdad, 25 July 2019 – Under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Representation in Iraq and in collaboration with FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa, a two-day Multi-Stakeholders Consultation on Strengthening the Food Control System was held in Iraq from 24-25 July 2019.
