Secretary-General's Message for 2019

United Nations Day highlights the enduring ideals of the Charter, which entered into force on this date 74 years ago.

Mosul-October 15th –The FAO project on Supporting Recovery of Agricultural livelihoods by revitalization of food production, value chains and income generation in Nineveh Governorate, was launched in an inception workshop organized in partnership with the Nineveh governorate, Ministry of Agriculture, Iraqi Farmers’ Union as well as other national stakeholders.

Baghdad, 21 October 2019 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, received today the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Norway, Ms. Erna Solberg, who is on an official visit to the Republic of Iraq.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has intensified its health support to vulnerable communities in areas of return in Ninewa governorate delivering more than 140,000 health interventions to people in and around Ba’aj town since January 2019. At Ba’aj primary health care center (PHCC) supported by WHO patients received consultations for all health conditions, vaccination, laboratory services, medicines, emergency health care and referrals for emergency cases

As a beacon of light in the struggling economy in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and with the assistance from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) the region is experiencing a spike in female and refugee entrepreneurs.

17 October 2019 - To improve living conditions for returnee populations living in newly liberated areas, UNOPS – with funding from the government of Japan – is helping to provide renewable energy and emergency waste disposal services in three Iraqi governorates.

Duhok Governorate - On Saturday night (12/10) almost 200 Syrian Kurds started crossing the border into Iraq’s Kurdistan Region (KRI) to escape bombardments in North Eastern Syria. The families crossed unofficial entry points into KRI, through the villages of Masaka and Sahela.

Erbil, 17 September 2019 - An agricultural training centre, constructed to support internally displaced Iraqis, officially opened its doors at the Harsham Refugee Camp in Erbil, the largest city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
