BAGHDAD 25 October 2018 – On 12 August 2018, an outbreak of gastrointestinal illnesses was detected in Basra, which is believed to have resulted from widespread water supply problems. Various gastrointestinal symptoms, as abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, and nausea, gas/bloating, diarrhea, and fever, were reported.

Baghdad, 01 November 2018 – A total of 69 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 105 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in October 2018*, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

As part of its support to enable communities returning home to have access to secondary health care services, the World Health Organization (WHO) has established and equipped a new emergency healthcare unit and an ambulance call center in Ana district in the west of Anbar governorate.

The Secretary-General congratulates Mr. Adel Abdul Mahdi on his confirmation as Iraq’s Prime Minister and welcomes the announcement of the formation of a new Government and the adoption of a new ministerial programme within the constitutional timeframe. He encourages the Council of Representatives to consider suitable women for the ministerial positions yet to be filled.

Baghdad, 25 October 2018 – Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Ján Kubiš, has welcomed the formal confirmation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, and expressed appreciation of the efforts of outgoing Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi throughout the last parliamentary term. He also welcomed the Council of Representatives’ endorsement of the government programme and the partial formation of the new Council of Ministers, although he has voiced deep concern at the lack of any female representation among ministers announced thus far.

BAGHDAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomes a contribution of €6 million (US$7 million) from the Government of Germany, which will support resilience and recovery efforts in Salah al-Din, Anbar and Ninewa governorates, as well as in the city of Mosul.

Baghdad, Iraq, 21 October 2018 – Following extensive discussions with Iraqi government and political party leaders, the Special Representative for Iraq of the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ján Kubiš, notes their intention to facilitate the formation of the next government within the constitutional timeline so it can promptly embark on responding to the needs and requirements of the people for services and their dignified life. Mr. Kubiš urges all the political parties to support Prime Minister-Designate Mr. Adel Abdel-Mahdi’s efforts and cooperate with him in the government formation process, prioritizing the well-being of the country and its people over partisan interests. The people of Iraq expect the Prime Minister-Designate to be able and free to choose his own Cabinet team with a composition that will send a strong positive response to Iraqi citizens who demand radical change and a break with the practices of the past.

Baghdad, October 21, 2018 – A child born in Iraq today will be 40% as productive when she grows up as she could be if she enjoyed complete education and full health, according to the World Bank’s new Human Capital Index (HCI) released October 11 in Bali. Decades of conflict have impacted a range of the country’s human and economic development indicators. Iraq is an early adopter of the World Bank’s Human Capital Project and plans to invest in its people to overcome development deficits with programs such as increasing early childhood development and the expansion of social protection systems.

Baghdad, 18 October 2018 – The presence of explosive hazards, including improvised explosive devices in areas liberated from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), will continue to impede security and stability efforts as well as development initiatives until these are cleared and rendered safe.

Baghdad, October 7, 2018 – The World Bank Group, the Government of Iraq, and the Government of Canada launched today a US$1.95 million grant to support Iraq’s efforts to strengthen systems and deliver programs to empower women economically and politically.
