Baghdad, 3 May 2018 - World Press Freedom Day was marked this year in Iraq with optimism and hope regarding the safety of journalists, for the country is expected to establish a National Mechanism for the safety of journalists and impunity related to crimes freedom of expression.

Baghdad, 03 May 2018: UNHCR Coordinator for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Ms. Monica Noro, and the Consul General of the State of Kuwait in Erbil, Dr. Omer Al-Kendari, visited Dohuk Governorate yesterday to observe the progress of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) project to improve the living conditions of camp-based Syrian refugees in Dohuk and Erbil Governorates in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

3 May 2018, Cairo – World Hand Hygiene Day, marked globally on 5 May, highlights the importance of hand hygiene in health care. The slogan of this year’s campaign is “It’s in your hands – prevent sepsis in health care”, illustrating the important relationship between good infection prevention and control practices, such as washing your hands, and preventing sepsis. The World Health Organization (WHO) calls on health facilities to prevent health care-associated sepsis through hand hygiene and action on infection prevention and control.

Baghdad, 02 May 2018 – A total of 68 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 122 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in April 2018*, according to casualty figures recorded by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The Government of Iraq’s Joint Coordination and Monitoring Centre (JCMC), in partnership with the international community, is establishing Community Resource Centres (CRCs) to provide services at the community level in areas receiving large numbers of returning internally displaced persons (IDPs).

26 April 2018; Erbil, Iraq - The Government of Australia has committed to providing UNFPA Iraq with an allocation of AUD 12 million over three years. The timely allocation will support the emergency reproductive health (RH) and gender-based violence (GBV) related services in the country.

Najaf, 25 April 2018 – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš, met with Adel Edan, Head of the IHEC office in Najaf, with whom he discussed the preparations in the Governorate for the Council of Representatives elections scheduled for 12 May 2018. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Mr. Kubiš said that he was encouraged by the public interest, in particular among youth and women, in the elections in the Holy City and was pleased with the progress of the electoral process.
