WHO technical experts visit health facilities in Sinjar district and on Sinjar Mountain in Ninewa Governorate

Sinjar, 10 March 2016 - A team of World Health Organization (WHO) technical experts lead by Acting WHO Representative in Iraq, Altaf Musani, conducted a field mission to Sinooni and Sinjar Mountain areas on 9 March 2016. The mission aim was to assess the current health situation and identify gaps in these newly accessible areas. The team visited Sinooni General Hospital and three other health centres at Sinjar Mountain.


Key findings noted were:
• Lack of medical doctors in Sonooni General Hospital and other functional health centers .
• Lack of reproductive health (RH) services in Sinooni General Hospital. Availability of a female medical doctors and health providers are critically needed.
• Need for strengthening the referral system at Sinjar mountain for patients needing secondary and tertiary care.
• Limited availability of mobile medical clinics to ensure access to essential health care delivery services in hard to reach areas.
Key outcomes include support Ninawa and Dohuk Directorates of Health (DOHs) and other health cluster partners in the area to address identified gaps and ensure access to quality preventive and curative health services to residents and returnees. These services will enhance ongoing recovery and stabilization efforts.
