SRSG Kobler condemns in the strongest terms the killing and injuring of dozens of Turkmen protestors in Tuz Khurmatu

Baghdad, 25 June 2013 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Martin Kobler, condemns in the strongest terms the killing and injuring of dozens of Turkmen protestors who were calling for more protection, including two prominent Turkmen leaders, Ahmed Abdel-Wahed and Ali Hashem Mukhtar Oglou.

“Such attacks aim to heighten tensions in this particularly sensitive region of Tuz Khurmatu,” Mr. Kobler said, urging Iraqi leaders to ensure that communities are protected and to take all necessary measures to defuse such an alarming situation.

The UN envoy reiterates his condemnation of all forms of violence, and extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims.
