UN Envoy calls on political entities to cooperate with IHEC for KR Provincial Elections

Baghdad, 14 September 2013 –  The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (DSRSG), Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, calls on all political entities to fully cooperate with the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) for the upcoming Kurdistan Governorate Council Elections scheduled for 21 November, and urges them to submit their lists of candidates before tomorrow's deadline.

“A full cooperation from all political entities is crucial to the democratic process in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq; UNAMI echoes IHEC’s call to political entities to submit the list of candidates before tomorrow’s deadline,” Mr. Busztin said, stressing that IHEC had already extended this deadline twice.

Following his visit to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, Mr. Busztin commended the work of IHEC and insisted on the importance of holding timely elections. "Postponing again the deadline could have an impact on the KR Governorate Elections date, but also on the preparation for the upcoming National Parliamentary Elections, scheduled in 2014," he warned.

Mr. Busztin took the opportunity to congratulate the political parties on the progress made in ensuring that the KR Parliamentary Elections take place as scheduled on 21 September and calls for wide voter participation.
