UN envoy strongly deplores the continued targeting of innocent civilians

Baghdad, 16 January 2014 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, strongly deplored the continued targeting of innocent civilians, including mourners at a funeral, in another bloody day that left dozens of people killed and injured across Baghdad and central Iraq.

“Terrorism can never be justified and all Iraqis have a responsibility to stand up against it. The people of Iraq have the right to live in peace, free of the fear of constant attacks by armed groups,” Mr. Mladenov said. “I urge all the leaders of Iraq to unite and create the security, political and social conditions that pull the country out of the cycle of violence and terror,” the UN Envoy also stated.

Mr. Mladenov also strongly condemned the targeting and killing of IHEC staff Bashar Qassem Ali Yassine in Mosul, saying that such despicable act should not derail the aspiration of the Iraqi people to elect their representatives through free and fair elections in April 2014.
