Baghdad, Iraq, 20 March, 2014.  In a high level ceremony attended by twenty media channels, the Operational Planning 2014-2015 of the Joint Program Review and Planning Mission for Iraq was officially endorsed by the Iraqi Ministry of Health represented by Deputy Minister of Health for Technical Affairs Dr. Sattar Jabbar and the World Health Organization for Iraq represented by WHO Representative and Head of Mission Dr. Syed Jaffar Hussain. The endorsement ceremony took place in the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, the 20th of March 2014.

“Iraq has a wealth of human resources for health distributed all over the governorates of the country,” said WHO Representative Dr. Syed Jaffar Hussain, adding that " Health indicators are showing improvement and life expectancy has improved from 61.5 to 69.5 over the past five-year period."

Responding to a question on the primary health care services in the country, Dr. Hussain demonstrated that WHO reports on Iraq indicate the existence of a rich network of hospitals  and primary health care facilities, one primary health care centre for every 10 000–45 000 citizens.

Iraq has identified the priority programs for WHO support for 2014–2015; preparations for Iraq’s biennial operational plan started in July 2013 through a very extensive multisectoral dialogue process. The process was led by the Ministry of Health but also comprised the Ministries of Environment, Industry, Higher Education and Scientific Research, Planning, and Finance. The plans were reviewed in a final meeting in November with all stakeholders and it was finally endorsed on the 20th of March 2014 by the two officials representing the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization for Iraq.
