SRSG Condemns Election Related Violence, Calls for Restraint

Baghdad, April 26, 2014 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, strongly condemned the increase in election related violence in Iraq, including yesterday's deadly multiple attacks on a campaign rally for elections.

“I condemn the latest incidents of election related violence and extend my condolences to the families of the victims. Such bloody attacks are unacceptable and aim to weaken the resolve of the people to participate in the elections. In a period which bears a significant importance for the future of Iraq, all parties must refrain from violence. The authorities should continue to make all necessary efforts to guarantee a level of security that will allow all Iraqi citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Both candidates and voters must be guaranteed safety throughout the campaign and on Election Day”, said the SRSG.

“Terror must not be allowed to weaken the resolve of the Iraqi people to participate in the elections and to have their say in the future direction of Iraq”, he concluded.
