SRSG Martin Kobler: Selection of New IHEC Board of Commissioners Should Be Based on Consensus

Baghdad, 27 June 2012 - During his visit today to the Parliamentary Committee of Experts, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler urged for the completion of the selection of the new Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC), based on consensus. عربي  كوردی

“You have reached the crucial stage where nine qualified candidates have to be selected as new Commissioners of IHEC. The credibility of future elections depends on your decision”, said SRSG Kobler addressing the Committee. “A decision taken by consensus by all groups, taking into account the representation of women and minorities will provide a strong foundation for democracy in Iraq”, he added.

The SRSG praised the conduct of the process through which the Committee of Experts has reviewed 7200 applications so far. He reiterated UNAMI\'s commitment to continue advising and observing the process of selection of new Commissioners and supporting IHEC.
