The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Martin Kobler, hailed this decision as timely to avoid any institutional void that could have hampered preparations for upcoming electoral processes in the country.

"It is critical that the current Board of Commissioners is able to continue its functions until the next Board of Commissioners is selected," SRSG Kobler said.

He stressed the importance of the independence and credibility of IHEC in consolidating the gains of the democratic transition in Iraq.

The United Nations reiterates the importance of completing the selection process for the next Board of Commissioners of IHEC at the soonest possible time while remaining consistent to the principles of transparency and professionalism in the selection.

The United Nations remains committed to supporting IHEC, and the institution’s responsibility for the conduct of all electoral processes in Iraq.
