SRSG Martin Kobler Meets with Kurdistan Regional Government’s Leadership

Erbil, 23 October 2011- In his first visit to Erbil, in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mr. Martin Kobler, met today with the leadership of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).


During his two-day visit to the Region, SRSG Kobler met with H.E. Masoud Barzani,  the  President  of  the  Kurdistan  Region and Mr. Kamal Kirkouki, the Speaker of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s Parliament. Mr. Kobler also met with Head of the KRG Department of Foreign Relations, Mr. Falah Mustafa Bakir, the Minister of Interior, Mr. Karim Sinjari, and the Minister of Pershmerga, Mr. Sheikh Ja’far Mustafa.


SRSG Kobler expressed his gratitude to President Barzani for the support the KRG has been extending to UNAMI and its office in Erbil, as well as the United Nations agencies operating in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. He emphasized to all interlocutors the keenness of the United Nations in Iraq to provide effective support in addressing national priorities and those identified in the Kurdistan Region.


SRSG Kobler was briefed during his meetings on the achievements made in the  Kurdistan  region, in particular in the economic and social fields, as well  as  on  the  latest  political  developments  in  the country and the Kurdistan region.


It is worth mentioning that SRSG Kobler visited Erbil Citadel and hosted a reception on the occasion of the United Nations Day at UNAMI Office in Erbil.


Prior to his visit to Erbil, Mr. Kobler visited Halabja where he paid tribute to the victims of the massacre perpetrated by the former regime in 1988.
