SRSG Martin Kobler Meets with Foreign Affairs Minister Hoshyar Zebari

Baghdad, 9 October 2011- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mr. Martin Kobler, began a series of visits to Iraqi senior government officials with a meeting held today with Foreign Affairs Minister Hoshyar Zebari.


SRSG Kobler expressed his gratitude to the Foreign Affairs Minister for the warm welcome in Iraq.


“I am very pleased to be here. I am actually proud to return to Iraq and serve in my current function under the banner of the United Nations,” SRSG Kobler said. He affirmed his commitment to build upon the work and the achievements made by his predecessors and provide assistance as requested by the Iraqi Government for a better future of all Iraqis. “We are here to serve the Iraqi people and I am looking forward to working closely with the Iraqi authorities in the fulfillment of the Mission’s mandate.”


The SRSG was accompanied by Mr. Jerzy Skuratowicz, his Deputy for political affairs, and Ms. Christine McNab, his Deputy for development and humanitarian support and Resident Coordinator/Humanitarian Coordinator.


Minister Zebari welcomed Mr. Kobler and assured him of the full support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for UNAMI and all United Nations agencies, funds and programmes operating in Iraq. He expressed appreciation for all the support provided so far by the Mission in several areas and for the work of the UN Country Team in the humanitarian and developments fields.


The Foreign Affairs Minister highlighted the main achievements obtained since 2003  and shared with the SRSG and UNAMI delegation his views on the key challenges Iraq has yet to address to succeed in its transition to an irreversible democratic, stable and prosperous state.


SRSG Kobler arrived yesterday in Baghdad to take up his duties.
