The United Nations in Iraq pays tribute to late Ammar al-Shahbander

Baghdad, 5 May 2015 – The United Nations family in Iraq presents its wholehearted condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Ammar al-Shahbander, Chief of Mission in Iraq for the Institute for War and Peace

Reporting (IWPR), who along with several other Iraqis, was killed on May 2, in a car bomb attack in the area of Karrada in Baghdad.

“Ammar al-Shahbander devoted his life, energy and resources to help build a transformed Iraq, where peace, justice and harmony would prevail”, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Mr. Ján Kubiš said. “The United Nations family in Iraq pays tribute to the dignified defender of freedom of expression and human rights, who trained scores of his journalist colleagues on how they could help Iraq become more democratic, more free. May his soul rest in peace”.
