Parwaz Hussen and thousands of her fans support UNESCO’s #Unite4Heritage campaign

Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq- 11 June 2015: Thousands of people gathered this afternoon at Shar Park in Erbil to listen Kurdish star Parwaz Hussen singing in support of UNESCO's #Unite4Heritage campaign.

The event was organized by the UNESCO Office for Iraq and supported by the Kurdistan Regional Government, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Rotana Hotel.

“This afternoon, heritage and music bind us together. Through music we send a message of unity to protect our heritage. We are together today with the wonderful backdrop of Erbil Citadel. A World Heritage Site….A heritage of humanity,” said Axel Plathe, Representative of UNESCO in Iraq.

After performing traditional and contemporary songs, Parwaz Hussen called on the audience to join her in supporting the #unite4heritage campaign.

#Unite4heritage was officially launched by the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova in Baghdad on 28 March 2015. The #Unite4Heritage campaign is a global UNESCO initiative that aims to mobilise support for the protection and safeguarding of heritage under threat, in Iraq and elsewhere. It is meant to counter propaganda of hatred, intolerance and violence which is being propagated by extremist groups, with messages of unity, tolerance and solidarity.

The event also celebrated World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a day which reflects on the great potential that diversity can contribute to building dialogue, enhancing social cohesion and promoting sustainable development.
