UN Envoy marks World Refugee Day

Baghdad 20 June 2015 - Today marks the annual commemoration of World Refugee Day, which is earmarked by the United Nations as a day of solidarity with the world's refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Ján Kubiš, said: "Word Refugee Day comes once again while the suffering of the Iraqi people continues with no end in sight. More people have been displaced since last year and the number is still increasing."

"Unless we see an end to the violence that has engulfed this country, we do not think that the situation will improve," Kubiš said.

"We hope that the international community will continue with its assistance in order for us to be able to provide the minimum assistance needed to alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi IDPs," he added.

“The only way to put a stop to the repetitive occurrence of massive displacement of Iraqis, lies in the eventual victory against so called ISIL,” Kubiš said.
