Acting UN Envoy condemns in the strongest terms devastating Baghdad bomb attack

Baghdad, 13 August 2015 – The Acting Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG), Mr.

Gyorgy Busztin, condemns in the strongest possible terms the devastating truck bomb attack that took place today at Jameela market in Sadr City, east Baghdad and killed at least 45 people and has wounded scores more.  These figures are tragically expected to rise.  ISIL has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

“I utterly condemn this heinous and cowardly attack, targeting innocent civilians, many children included, in a public market place”, DSRSG Busztin said.

“It is an indiscriminate act of terrorism aimed at weakening the resolve of the Iraqi people.  I have no doubt in my mind that the terrorists will fail”, Busztin added.

Mr. Busztin extends his profound sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families and has called for the perpetrators of the crime to be swiftly brought to justice.
