16 September 2015 - Within the framework of dialogue, civil peace, political and social national reconciliation, a conference was held on Wednesday, 16 September 2015, to address the role of the media and public opinion venues in supporting the national reconciliation process.

The conference was the fruit of cooperation between the Implementation and Follow-up Committee for National Reconciliation - Prime Minister Office, and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

The event was attended by more than 100 media figures, academics, and other civil society representatives.

Addressing the conference’s attendants, the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, said the most significant outcome of the country’s democratic changes after 2003 was “the freedom of press,” and called on all journalists to use this freedom to support government policies that seek to restore security and stability.

Mr. Busztin underlined that Iraq is experiencing a major crisis as “the most evil terrorism forces” invade large areas of its land. He added that the unification of efforts to liberate Iraq’s territory is paramount, and that national reconciliation is the only solution to overcome the current conditions endured by the country.

The Prime Minister’s Advisor for National Reconciliation, Mr. Mohammed Salman, noted the fresh mentality and comprehensive management style adopted by the National Reconciliation Committee which are inspired by its belief that national reconciliation cannot succeed without the contribution of society’s elite figures and state institutions, adding that Iraq’s crisis can only be resolved by inclusive and mandatory solutions for all disputed affairs.

Mr. Salman said the committee has embarked on a low-profile and tireless endeavor in cooperation with UNAMI to contact all the stakeholders inside and out of the political process, whether directly or through intermediaries, to reach preliminary understandings over national reconciliation. He stressed the important role shouldered by society’s prominent figures and opinion makers as they serve as the nucleus and bearers of the national reconciliation project.

The conference concluded with several essential recommendations to be implemented through a wide variety of print, visual and audio media promotion programs, as well as electronic media outlets and social media platforms.

An ad-hoc specialized committee was also formed by the participants, to follow up on the implementation of the recommendations. The committee also includes representatives of UNAMI and of the Implementation and Follow-up Committee for National Reconciliation, who also agreed to continue their joint efforts as they move ahead with the national reconciliation process.
