Electoral rallies must take place without fear of insecurity and violence, UN envoy

Baghdad, 6 April 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, condemns in the strongest terms the suicide attack on an open-air election rally in Baquba today that killed and injured dozens of people.

“Candidates must be able to campaign without fear of intimidation, threats or violence, and citizens must be able to freely participate in electoral campaigns, without fear of being targets of deadly attacks,” the UN envoy said, adding that “the security forces are responsible for protecting candidates and their supporters, just like they are responsible for protecting all Iraqis.”
