UNICEF thanks the State and people of Kuwait for its continuous support to help Iraq’s Children

BAGHDAD, 2 December 2016 – As the crisis in Iraq deepens, UNICEF continues to be at the frontlines to meet the urgent needs of the country’s most vulnerable girls and boys, with invaluable support from donors.

The State of Kuwait has been a generous donor to UNCEF’s work to help the children affected by the crisis in Iraq.

“The funding from the State of Kuwait will allow UNICEF to expand the delivery of life-saving assistance in water, sanitation and hygiene, education and nutrition to the children of Iraq,” said Peter Hawkins, UNCIEF’s Representative in Iraq.

In addition to almost one quarter of a million Syrian refugees in Iraq, nearly 3.2 million people are internally displaced in Iraq as a result of ongoing violence.

Overall, it is estimated that 10 million Iraqis, nearly half of them children, need humanitarian assistance. Nearly 3.5 million school-aged Iraqi children are missing out on education, and more than 600,000 displaced children have missed an entire year of school.

With the latest support of 4 million US$ from the State of Kuwait, UNICEF and its partners will be able to continue meet the humanitarian needs of Iraqi children and their families.

“The help of the State of Kuwait is commendable,” Hawkins said.

UNICEF continues to count on the State of Kuwait as a major global donor of humanitarian and development assistance to respond to the most urgent needs of the most vulnerable children around the world.
