WHO welcomes continued support from the Government of France and European Union Member States

6 January 2017 – The World Health Organization (WHO) welcomes the in-kind donation of medicines and medical supplies from the Government of France, which were handed over to a WHO delegation by H.E. President Francois Hollande during his visit to Iraq on 2 January 2017.

The donation contains emergency medicines and supplies, including for trauma and pain management that will be used to treat people affected by the ongoing conflict in Mosul. This donation is part of the wider support that European Union Member States are providing to Iraq through the United Nations in general and WHO specifically.

“This new donation will certainly boost the emergency response by WHO, national health authorities and partners to meet increasing needs for trauma and pain management services,” said Mr Altaf Musani, WHO Representative in Iraq.

As of 30 December 2016, a total of 2666 casualties have been referred to the 2 major referral emergency hospitals in Erbil in northern Iraq, with increasing numbers of civilian casualties reported.

Since the beginning of the Mosul liberation operation in October 2016, WHO has supported Iraq’s federal and regional health authorities by providing trauma and surgical medicines and supplies for 214 950 beneficiaries. A well experienced surgeon recruited by WHO, through the Emergency Medical Team (EMT) network is working with senior and junior doctors and surgeons in Erbil to scale up capacity in the area of war surgery.

In November 2016, WHO established 3 trauma stabilization points in newly accessible areas to ensure that injured patients received lifesaving care while being transported to referral emergency hospitals in Erbil. WHO has also provided more than 30 ambulances to strengthen referral pathways.
