The following is a joint message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, observed on 3 May

Baghdad, 30 April 2013 - The United Nations today urged the Communication and Media Commission (CMC) to reconsider its decision to suspend the licenses of several TV stations in Iraq.

Baghdad, 30 April 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, welcomed the successful outcome of yesterday’s meeting in Ramadi between the protest leaders, senior governorate officials and military and police commanders.

The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the upsurge of violence throughout Iraq that has left many dead and injured hundreds over the past week.  He expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes the wounded a speedy recovery.

Baghdad, 28 April 2013 – UNDP has signed grant agreements with eight Civil Society Organization (CSO) consortia in Iraq, representing 31 local CSOs across the country.

Baghdad, 28 April 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler, welcomes the scheduled meeting between Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and the Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister Nichervan Barzani on Monday 29 April in Baghdad.

Baghdad, 27 April 2013 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, called the killing of Jalal Diab, the head of the Movement of Free Iraqis (Ansar al-Huriya), a shameful and despicable murder. Diab headed an NGO defending the rights of the black Iraqi minority community in the South. He was assassinated on Friday in Basra province.

Baghdad, 26 April 2013 - In a strong call for restraint and serious dialogue, after the recent clashes that killed and wounded hundreds across Iraq, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Martin Kobler, expressed his fear that the country could head towards the unknown if decisive measures are not taken immediately and effectively to stop the spiral of violence from unfolding further.

Baghdad, 24 April 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler, expressed his disappointment about the government’s decision to set 4 July 2013 as the date for Governorate Council Elections in Anbar and Ninewa.
