Baghdad, 24 December 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov today condemned the attack on the Iraqiya TV studios in Tikrit which resulted in the killing of five journalists and the wounding of five others. Mr. Mladenov also condemned the killing of four students at Salah El-Din University, also in Tikrit.

Baghdad, 18 December 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov condemns in the strongest terms the recent spate of attacks deliberately targeting pilgrims commemorating Al-Arba’een. 

Faced with the prospect of a worsening situation inside Syria and continuing outflows of refugees in 2014 UN agencies on Monday appealed to donors for US$6.5 billion in funds – the biggest amount so far requested for a single humanitarian emergency.

QAMISHLY, Syria – The UN World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), and UNICEF have started airlifting urgently needed humanitarian aid from Erbil, Iraq, to Qamishly in northeast Syria as displaced families start to face one of the harshest winters ever as winter storm “Alexa” dumped large amounts of snow and brought cold temperatures to the region.

Baghdad, 15 December 2013 – The United Nations in Iraq announces that the first WFP chartered flight that will allow UN relief agencies (WFP and UNICEF) to resupply their warehouses in Eastern Syria took off today from Erbil airport to Eastern Syria. The flight, which transported around 4 tons of food items provided by WFP, is the first of several others which will transport a total of 400 metric tons of WFP provided food items, as well as 24 tons of UNICEF provided food items and 196 kg of medical kits, from their reserves in Iraq.

Paris, 10 December—The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today expressed grave concern about the safety of journalists in Iraq following news of the murder of two reporters in recent days: Adel Mohsen Hussien and Waddah Al-Hamdani.

Baghdad, 10 December 2013 – The Government of Iraq and the United Nations in Iraq have reached agreement to facilitate the opening of a humanitarian corridor that will allow UN relief agencies (UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF) to resupply their warehouses in Eastern Syria with quantities of food and non-food items, medical kits and educational supplies from reserves in Iraq.

Baghdad, 10 December 2013 – On Human Rights Day, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, called on all sectors of Iraqi society to work together to find constructive ways to ensure the peaceful resolution of tensions that are fueling violence, discord and division. “Everyone in Iraq can meaningfully participate in community reconciliation and promotion of justice, in non-violent and constructive ways”, Mr. Mladenov said.
