Baghdad, 3 December 2013 – “Approximately 2.75 million Iraqis live with disabilities, many of them facing exclusion that profoundly affects their full participation in the society, impacting on their lives, their rights and their development,” a fact underlined by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, on International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

GENEVA ¦ 2 December 2013 – As many as 500 000 people suffer a spinal cord injury each year. People with spinal cord injuries are two to five times more likely to die prematurely, with worse survival rates in low- and middle-income countries. The new WHO report, International perspectives on spinal cord injuries, summarizes the best available evidence on the causes, prevention, care and lived experience of people with spinal cord injury.

Baghdad, 30 November 2013 – “Iraq Youth Conference for Social Peace is a needed reminder that young people coming together against terror can be a powerful force for good, said the Special Representative of the United Nations for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, at today’s National Youth Conference for Social Peace.

UNESCO Office for Iraq concluded a first training workshop to raise awareness of professionals working in the field of refugees' families support on the best parenting practices, and build their capacities to enable them to facilitate sessions themselves, in order to improve the general prospect of early childhood care in refugees' camps and marginalized communities around Iraq.

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the recent spate of terrorist attacks in Iraq, in which scores of civilians lost their lives and hundreds more were wounded.  The attacks deliberately targeted locations where civilians congregate, including schools and places of worship.  The members of the Security Council expressed their deep condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed their support for the people and the Government of Iraq, and their commitment to Iraq’s security.

Baghdad, 25 November 2013 – Briefing the Security Council today on the Secretary-General’s first report pursuant to paragraph 6 of resolution 2110 of 2013 (S/2013/661), on the activities of UNAMI and the most recent developments in Iraq, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov acknowledged that “Iraq’s challenges can no longer be considered in isolation from the broader risks that face the region.” 

BAGHDAD – The UN World Food Programme (WFP) has begun to use smart cards to deliver cash assistance in Iraq to participants in its cash-for-assets projects in Baghdad, Diyala and Ninewah.

Baghdad, 25 November 2013 – On International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) today, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, used the opportunity to appeal to Iraqi leaders to “take concrete steps to enact and enforce laws which prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV), including holding perpetrators accountable, and to create a framework for better outcomes for women and communities.” 

(New York, 21 November) - In her first message as UN Women Executive Director for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November), Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka calls on the international community to be  ‘part of creating solutions” to the pandemic of violence against women and girls, which today  impacts one in three women worldwide. The International Day to End Violence against Women is commemorated worldwide on 25 November. The Day also kicks off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, whereby individuals and groups mobilize and call for the elimination of violence against women and girls. This year’s official theme is “Orange the World in 16 Days”.
