Erbil, 31 October 2013 - The Kurdistan Region Government and the Integrated Coordination Office for Development and Humanitarian Affairs (ICODHA) of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) have announced today signing of an agreement to launch a joint Trust Fund aimed at supporting the Kurdistan Region Government’s development vision outlined in the Kurdistan Vision 2020 Development Strategy. The official title of the fund is “Kurdistan Vision 2020 Joint Programming Facility”. 

Baghdad, 30 October 2013; As the humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, more innocent people find themselves obligated to flee violence and seek refuge in the neighbouring countries. With the increasing number of Syrian refugees in Iraq, urgent challenges arise on many levels.

In the framework of UNESCO' quality interventions in the field of Higher Education in Iraq, two workshops have been organized to enhance and expand quality assurance processes in Iraqi universities, and review the improvement plans of academic performance in selected universities to ensure the transition from quality assurance towards quality improvement.

Within its efforts to upgrade the Iraqi educational system, update the current curricula in place, and establish a sustainable curriculum development, UNESCO Office in Iraq organized a three day workshop to build the capacities of Iraqi experts in developing practical guidelines for setting teacher guides for grades 1 to 6.

As the humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, more innocent people find themselves obligated to flee violence and seek refuge in the neighbouring countries. With the increasing number of Syrian refugees in Iraq, urgent challenges arise on many levels. UNESCO, along with other international agencies, has assumed its leading role in responding to the Syrian Refugees Crisis in Iraq.

Baghdad, 28 October 2013; In the framework of their significant efforts towards supporting the Iraqi government in overcoming the devastating impact of water shortage, UNESCO and the European Union (EU) launched the phase II of the "Advanced Survey of Hydrogeological Resources in Iraq" (ASHRI-2), a pioneering initiative that aims to improve national capacities in the exploration and integrated management of groundwater resources, and enhance both, efficiency and effectiveness of public planning and policy making in the National Water Sector.

Baghdad, 28 October 2013 – The United Nations in Iraq today marked the United Nations Day, which is celebrated worldwide on 24 October of each year, the day that saw the UN Charter enter into force in 1945.

With the aim of setting an institutional framework for an effective Quality Assurance system in Iraq, UNESCO organized a technical workshop gathering key officials from the ministries of Education in Baghdad and Erbil to discuss international best practices and applicable models.

Baghdad, 17 October 2013 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, condemns in the strongest terms the suicide bomb attack in Mwafaqiya village in Ninewa Province, killing and injuring dozens, most of them children and women.  “The United Nations pays particular attention to the protection of minority communities who continue suffering from heinous attacks, economic and social barriers,” Mr. Mladenov said.
