Baghdad, 3 September 2013 - 24 hours after the tragic events that took place in Camp Ashraf, a UNAMI delegation led by the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG), Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, and including UNAMI Chief of Human Rights and of Medical Sections, conducted a visit to the camp yesterday, where they met separately with the camp’s surviving residents and the commander of Diyala’s Police.

New York, 1 September 2013 - The Secretary-General deplores the tragic events in Camp Ashraf today that have reportedly left 47 killed.  He expresses his sorrow and extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

2 September 213 - World Health Organization is supporting the efforts of the Government of Iraq and Government of KRG in ensuring access of the Syrian Refugees to basic and life-saving health services both inside and outside the camp. With the new influx of refugees in KRG Region, there is tremendous pressure on the government and UN/Non-UN partners from the humanitarian community for providing health services. WHO is working closing with the government and UN/Non-UN partners to mitigate this burden through provision of essential and life-saving medicines and supplies, disease surveillance, health needs assessment, disease early warning system, strengthening the referral services, monitoring health trends, care of patients with chronic diseases and mental health address and capacity building.

1 September 2013 - UNHCR has received reports this morning of an attack on Camp Ashraf, in eastern Iraq.

Baghdad, 01 September 2013 – The Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Gyorgy Busztin, strongly condemns today’s tragic events in Camp Ashraf, which reportedly led to the killing and injuring of several camp residents.

Erbil, Iraq, 29 August 2013 - As the exodus continues of Syrians into the Kurdistan region of Iraq, the leaders of the UN refugee agency and the World Food Programme paid tribute to the government here for giving refuge to almost 200,000 people, including some 47,000 arriving in the last two weeks. Despite the strain of accommodating such a large number, the regional authorities have opened their border and offered land to accommodate refugees in camps.

Erbil, 29 August 2013 (UNESCO) - The United Nations Education and Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Norwegian Refugees Council (NRC) are joining efforts with partners from  the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), sister UN agencies, national and international NGOs to address the critical and urgent educational needs of  Syrian refugees in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I).
