Baghdad, 25 November 2013 – On International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) today, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, used the opportunity to appeal to Iraqi leaders to “take concrete steps to enact and enforce laws which prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV), including holding perpetrators accountable, and to create a framework for better outcomes for women and communities.” 

(New York, 21 November) - In her first message as UN Women Executive Director for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November), Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka calls on the international community to be  ‘part of creating solutions” to the pandemic of violence against women and girls, which today  impacts one in three women worldwide. The International Day to End Violence against Women is commemorated worldwide on 25 November. The Day also kicks off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, whereby individuals and groups mobilize and call for the elimination of violence against women and girls. This year’s official theme is “Orange the World in 16 Days”.

The European Union Integrated Rule of Law Mission for Iraq, EUJUST LEX-Iraq (EJL-I) concluded its last training, a four-day workshop on International cooperation to combat human trafficking, on 20 November.

Baghdad, 22 November 2013 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Mr. Nickolay Mladenov and the UN family in Iraq have been closely following with Iraqi officials the assistance that the United Nations can provide to the Government, more particularly the Ministry of Displacement and Migration (MoDM), in its efforts in assisting the communities affected by the recent floods caused by heavy rains.

Baghdad, 14 November 2013 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov, strongly condemns the increased attacks against the pilgrims of Ashura during which dozens of innocent people were killed and injured in several incidents across Iraq. 

In another joint initiative to support Syrian refugees in Iraq and improve the general educational scheme for children in camps, the United Nations agencies launched a new campaign to encourage Syrian children to enroll in schools so they can avoid the forced educational disruption.

Baghdad, Iraq, 3 November 2013 – A new legal help desk in Baghdad’s Rusafa Courthouse was inaugurated after Iraq’s Higher Judicial Council (HJC) partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Iraqi non-governmental organisation Dar Al Khibra to provide free legal services to indigent Iraqi citizens as part of a larger effort to strengthen the administration of and citizens’ access to justice in the country.

Baghdad, 3 November 2013; The United Nations’ Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), announced today the launching of the Analysis Report “Integrated Drought Risk Management – National Framework for Iraq" produced by UNESCO’s Iraq Office under the Drought Risk Management (DRM) Project.
