Baghdad, 25 June 09 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura expressed the United Nations outrage and condemnation of the horrifying bombing in Sadr City on 24 June 2009, and a recent string of bombings and shootings throughout Iraq.

Baghdad-21 June 2009-- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura condemned in the strongest terms the abhorrent bombing in Taza district south of Kirkuk. The bombing on Saturday, 20 June, resulted in the killing of more than 70 civilians and the wounding of more than 180 others.

Baghdad-17 June 2009- The Iraqi  Council of Representatives (CoR) and the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) organized a two day conference in Baghdad titled ‘The Future of Iraq’ dedicated to the discussion of hydrocarbon revenue and water sharing. The conference, held on 14-15 June, was made possible with logistical support by UNOPS and funding from the European Union. This event was a continuation of previously held roundtable-discussions on federalism and hydrocarbon resources management that were held in Baghdad and Erbil between July 2008 and April 2009.

Baghdad-15 June 2009-The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura leaves Baghdad after almost two years as the United Nations’ top official in Iraq and will be taking up his new assignment as Deputy Executive Director of the World Food Programme of the UN, where he  will continue to take a close interest in matters dealing with the Middle East region, including Iraq.

Baghdad-Friday, 12 June 2009-The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura condemned in the strongest terms the shocking assassination of Harith Al-Ubaidi, head of the Accordance Front-Al Tawaffuq in the Iraqi council of Representatives. Mr. de Mistura described the assassination of Al-Ubaidi as, “Particularly deplorable and a tragic loss as the late Harith Al-Ubaidi was known for his ability to work with all the different groups and political blocs, and who tirelessly worked to ensure the rights of detainees, and the enactment of the Human Rights Commission Law.”

Task Force on Dialogue Launched

Baghdad-Thursday, 11 June 2009-The Special Representative of the United Nations’ Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura met on Wednesday, 10 June 2009, with senior representatives of the Prime Minister of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. The purpose of the meeting, which was held at the United Nations House in Baghdad was to launch the Task Force on Dialogue for follow-up to the UNAMI reports. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 16 June, and thereafter on a weekly basis under UN auspices. In his report to the UN Security Council released earlier this week in New York, Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon expressed his support for UNAMI\'s efforts to facilitate a political dialogue and assist the parties in finding mutually acceptable solutions. He noted that, "In particular, UNAMI\'s in-depth analytical report on Iraq’s disputed internal boundaries could serve as useful starting point for constructive dialogue. I urge Iraqi leaders use the opportunity to engage in a process to resolve these important issues."

Baghdad-10 June 2009- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura condemned in the strongest terms the car bombing in Nasiriyah on Wednesday  10 June 2009 which left more than 35 people dead and scores of others wounded. Mr. de Mistura described the bombing as, “A cruel crime against innocent civilians that aims to derail Iraq’s stability.”

Baghdad-31 May 2009-The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura congratulated the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and people of the Northern Region of Kurdistan (KRG) for completing a successful and peaceful first week of the voter registration update ahead of KRG elections scheduled for 25 July. He noted that eighty nine voter registration update centers successfully opened across KRG and in Baghdad on May 25th. During the first week 40, 476 people visited the centers to verify or correct their information so that they are properly registered to vote.  IHEC reported that 1,109 observers and 650 political agents that visited the eighty nine centers to ensure proper procedures are being followed.

Baghdad-21 May 2009- The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG) Staffan de Mistura strongly condemned the bombings in Baghdad and Kirkuk on Wednesday, 20 May and Thursday 21 May. Mr. de Mistura described these attacks which resulted in the death and injury of dozens of innocent Iraqi citizens, as “reprehensible crimes that have indiscriminately targeted ordinary Iraqis".”

Baghdad-Thursday, 14 May 2009-Last week UNAMI organized a 4-day visit to Northern Ireland for the members of the Article 23 Committee, as well as some members of the Kirkuk Provincial Council from all the four components, and other senior police officials from Kirkuk.
